New York City’s New Business Recycling Laws

Back in February of 2016, the DSNY established new recycling laws for businesses throughout all five boroughs of NYC.

The new rules require ALL businesses in New York City to recycle metal, glass, plastic, beverage cartons, paper and cardboard. In addition to having solid waste removal services. Certain businesses are required to recycle other items depending on their size and type.

NYC new recycling law timeline

The new laws are going into effect on August 1st, 2017. Currently the city has been issuing warning citations for businesses who are not in compliance. All businesses who do not comply with the city’s new regulations after August 1, 2017 will be issued a summons.

The order of this new law is to move in the director of zero waste. New York would like to follow the model cities around the country and make this efficient to avoid higher costs for smaller businesses.

The waste industry is always looking to improve proper disposal and be more efficient for businesses. It is important that businesses follow the requirements to avoid any fines that may be issued.
