The start of a new year is the time for new beginnings! If starting a new career is one of your resolutions, there are a few things you should consider.
While you are planning a change in your career path, you should really look into the company culture of your new employer – and by “company culture”, I mean the company’s personality. Sure, looking at the tasks and responsibilities are important, but they are only a part of the job. You also want to find out what makes that employer so unique!
Check the company’s website, specifically the Careers page. Start to ask questions that would help your decision making process such as:
- How does the company talk about their employees?
- What do they choose to highlight on their Careers page?
Look for employee testimonials over written text directly from the company. Company websites that focus on high profile clients or projects may have a culture that values prestige and titles, whereas websites that highlight employee accomplishments and community involvement may have a culture that values growth and advancement. Think about what type of culture will let you reach your career goals, and do your research to find the right company.
Read Employee Reviews:
Websites such as Glassdoor allows employees to submit confidential feedback about their employers. Read what employees have to say to get a first-hand account of what it’s like working at the company. Even great employers are going to have some bad reviews. Also pay attention to if and how the company has responded to reviews. Are they acknowledging and learning from negative feedback, or simply trying to avoid talking about bad reviews?
You also want to be part of a company that will allow you to grow and lead you to success! There are independent organizations who research and rank employers based on feedback from their employees. Look for logos such as “Top Workplace” or “Best place to work” on the company’s website.
Even though you’re applying to a specific position, chances are you do not want to stay in that position for the rest of your career. Look for a company that invests in its employees and tries to promote from within whenever possible. The career page on the company’s website will give you some clues on this. If you get invited to an interview, ask the recruiter or hiring manager about their career with the company and make it clear that you are looking to grow with the company long-term.
When you are ready to take your career to the next level, don’t just focus on the job description on Indeed or Monster. Do your research to make sure that you choose an employer who will support not only your next position, but your long-term career.
