Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is what we use to protect us from the hazards we may encounter in our work. It is important that you wear the proper PPE for the job you are performing and knowing how to wear it properly.

PPE will no protect you if you do not wear it…you MUST wear it! The video below highlights the proper PPE needed for each specific waste management task.

OSHA also explains that employers are also required to train each worker required to use personal protective equipment to know:

  • When it is necessary
  • What kind is necessary
  • How to properly put it on, adjust, wear and take it off
  • The limitations of the equipment
  • Proper care, maintenance, useful life, and disposal of the equipment

There may be different PPE requirements for the jobs you are performing.

Drivers:

  • Steel toe boots
  • Work gloves
  • High vis shirt, vest, sweatshirt/jacket
  • Hardhat for when your on the tipping floor emptying the truck

Helpers:

  • Steel toe boots
  • Work gloves
  • High vis shirt, vest, sweatshirt/jacket

Sorters:

  • Steel toe boots
  • Hard hat
  • Hearing protection
  • Eye protection
  • High vis shirt, vest, jacket/sweatshirt
  • Puncture resistant work gloves

Mechanics and Welders:

  • Steel toe boots
  • Flame retardant uniform
  • High vis shirt, vest, jacket/sweatshirt for road calls
  • Work gloves
  • Eye protection when cutting, burning, or grinding
  • Welding hood & welding screen
