Interstate Waste Services, Apex Landfill, marked a significant milestone with a ribbon cutting ceremony for the completion of a road paving project along a one mile stretch of County Road 51 on Friday.
The project was a collaborative effort to improve local infrastructure and enhance safety for area residents and commuters.
“The crowning of a road that has been decimated for many, many years,” said David Cieply, executive vice president of landfill and rail operations. County Road 51, which is a main feeder into the landfill, needed some tremendous help over the years. I spoke earlier about huge depressions in it and people had to pretty much drive around every one of those holes to get here.”
Apex Landfill, which was purchased by Interstate Waste Services in 2020, finalized the paving project in July. The initiative combined public and private investment, with three grants totaling $550,000 secured to support the work. IWS contributed an additional $1.17 million, demonstrating its commitment to improving the community it serves.
“This company came in and started in 2020, and the improvements they have made is just unbelievable,” German Township Trustee Frank Kellar said. “This company cares about the traveling public. They care about the community, they are good partners to work with, and if they tell you they’re gonna do something, they will do it.”
Local officials praised the work and the impact of the upgraded road.
“I’ve lived here my entire life, and this road has been horrendous,” German Township Trustee Neal Dawson said. “And this is just amazing how nice it is. For people traveling through here, they have to be happy with this. It’s been well past time.”
The road is expected to last another 50 years.
