Diesel Technician (Sloatsburg, NY)

Our Heavy Duty Diesel Technicians play a key role in keeping our company running. Without skilled Technicians who know how to diagnose and repair issues safely and quickly, providing an excellent work place for our employees and exceptional service to our customers would be next to impossible.

Our Diesel Mechanic/Technicians perform inspection, diagnosis, preventative maintenance, and repair of electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment, including diesel heavy trucks and engines. Utilizing diagnostic software, the Technician is responsible for interpreting failure modes and initiate or assign necessary repairs. At times, the Technician may be on call, and required to assist with emergency breakdowns.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintains advanced knowledge to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment.
  • Performs repairs and assigned preventative maintenance services.
  • Estimates time and material cost on vehicle repairs and requisition of new parts.
  • Conduct safety checks on vehicles.
  • Completes required paperwork utilizing fleer maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles, documenting part usage, and accounting for repair time.
  • Reviews, completes, or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Company safety protocols and OSHA standards.
  • Assists Sr. Technicians in the completion of project work.

Work Environment: Jersey City

  • We are continuously investing in equipment, and many of our trucks are less than 2 years old.
  • The Diesel Mechanic/Technician will primarily be working out of our Sloatsburg location, however occasional travel to other sites as well as assisting with emergency breakdowns will be required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided.
  • The Diesel Mechanic/Technician position may be required to lift up to 50 pounds. Frequent squatting and standing is required.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • A valid driver’s license is required. CDL preferred.
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in job duties.
  • Must possess own tools and be willing to work 6-days a week with OT pay.
  • Experience with troubleshooting/repairing DPF systems diagnostic software such as Premium Tech Tool (Mack), Allison transmission, Cummins, CAT, Peterbilt, and Paccar.
  • Yellow Iron experience and/or experience as a Mechanic or Technician for a refuge company is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of applicable DOT and OSHA standards and regulations.
  • Must be able to speak and read English well enough to converse with colleagues, drivers and dispatch, and be able to make legible entries on reports and records.
  • Must be able to meet the physical and safety requirements of the position.

Heavy Equipment Operator (Hillburn/Airmont)

Job Highlights: Heavy Equipment Operator

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for the loading, pushing, and transferring of solid waste material in our transfer station. The ideal candidate will have the ability to completely maintain this transfer station in an efficient and professional manner. They will possess both a team work mentality as well as self-motivating traits.

Additional Responsibilities: Heavy Equipment Operator

  • Operate heavy duty equipment such as excavators and bucket loaders (yellow iron equipment), with various other small machinery
  • Routinely set up and inspect equipment prior to operation
  • Have knowledge of machine capabilities and limitations
  • Observe hand signals, grade stakes, or other markings when operating machines to perform work duties in compliance of safety specifications
  • Receive written and oral instruction regarding material movement
  • Move materials over short distances, around facility
  • Maintain an efficient flow by loading transfer trailers to target load weight and reduce traffic congestion
  • Create and maintain inclines or ramps
  • Repair machinery and replace parts as needed

Work Environment:

  • This Equipment Operator will be based in our Hillburn or Airmont location.
  • Daily exposure to physical environment including odors, loud noises, weather elements, etc.

Light Driver - Rockland County

Job Description

The Light Driver’s main responsibility replicates that of a Collection Helper’s duties, which is to collect (primarily by hand) and load refuse from customer locations into a heavy duty sanitation vehicle. However, a Light Driver must obtain a clean driving record should they ever need to operate a company vehicle which does not require a Commercial Driver’s License. The position reports to the Operations Manager onsite, but is also subject to supervision by route supervisors and dispatchers. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Transfer refuse in a timely and safe manner from customer stops to vehicle
  • Assist the driver while maneuvering into positions for collection and disposal
  • Maintain and partake in daily clean-up of vehicle
  • Learn garbage routes to better assist driver
  • Attend all required training, operational meetings, and mandatory monthly Safety Meetings

Work Environment

  • Helpers spend majority of daily routine both in the cab of the truck, on the back of the truck, or moving around the truck for trash collection
  • Helpers must be able to physically mount and dismount the truck throughout the duration of the work day
  • Helpers must be able to constantly lift, push, and pull waste bags and receptacles that weigh approximately 50-75+ lbs. as part of their daily routine. The bags usually have no wheels or handles for easier maneuverability, so the employee must have the physical strength to carry out the job duties
  • This job is exposed to regular and inclement weather conditions

Requirements

  • Applicants must meet physical standards as specified above
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States
  • Experience from the sanitation industry is strongly preferred
  • A clean driving record is strongly preferred, however, not a requirement
  • Position requires a team-player attitude as job is spent in close quarters with other staff members that all rely on one another

Route Safety Supervisor (Jersey City, NJ)

The Route Safety Supervisor is mainly responsible for educating and training sanitation collection employees and regularly monitoring and supervising those routes throughout the NJ/NYS/NYC area. This position plays a major role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our front-line employees who service widespread geographical areas day in and day out. Each weekly shift rotation is as follows:

  • Begin Sunday Night 8:00pm – End Friday Morning 6:00am
  • Begin Monday Night 8:00pm – End Saturday Morning 6:00am

Additional Responsibilities

  • Educate and train sanitation collection employees to perform job properly and efficiently
  • Conduct such training which includes lifting and pulling waste bags and receptacles while following company safety standards
  • Conduct daily shift safety briefings at company depots
  • Conduct daily route safety observations of both drivers and collection helpers
  • Following training, coach employees based off route and behavioral observations
  • Perform routine route vehicle inspections
  • Respond to vehicle accidents and conduct preliminary investigations
  • Use discretion on training and educational material/ topics conveyed to staff
  • Understand current traffic laws and regulations specific to the region supervised
  • Work closely in conjunction with Operations managers to recommend disciplinary actions as needed following safety incidents

Work Environment

  • The Route Safety Supervisor will be based in our Jersey City, NJ location, however daily job duties require traveling throughout NY/NJ areas
  • This position requires both standing and sitting duties throughout the day.
  • This position is provided a company vehicle for route observations and other travel.
  • The standard workweek is defined by management and may be changed but is regularly a 10 hour shift with a meal break (50 hour per week minimum) paid at an annual rate.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • High school/GED education completed, higher education is a plus.
  • Experience from the transportation industry, safety industry or route supervision field strongly preferred.

The Safety Analyst is mainly responsible for supporting the Safety Department with various administrative and field work tasks. The role is accountable for accurate paperwork processing and timely execution of various safety reports, checks and verifications both in house and in compliance with all state and federal laws. Additional Responsibilities

  • Update existing and process new DQ (Driver Qualification) files for each Driver
  • Record environmental incidents and upload equipment list regularly in SMS360 (Safety Management Systems)
  • Create weekly incident report from SMS data
  • Upload employee list on weekly basis accounting for any new hires or terminations
  • Process request for new driver applicants, review and summarize Motor Vehicle Reports for Safety Director
  • Maintain and file all drug and alcohol forms
  • Assist with quarterly site inspection visits
  • Update Emergency Evacuation plans and policies
  • Maintain and update NYS LENS database (License Event Notification Service)
  • Track incentive performance
  • Develop safety messages and presentations for depot monitors and meetings
  • Assist with Fire Sprinkler Compliance meetings which includes maintaining repairs, regular monitoring, and any issues with sprinkler systems
  • Maintain and distribute department/safety related information throughout company as needed
  • Assist safety managers with data development
  • Update policies and procedures as directed
  • Communicate with supervisors and managers about operational safety issues on a daily basis
  • Communicate with site personnel and employees about safety concerns and expiring driver documentation
  • Prepare orders for PPE (protective equipment/uniform) and order department training materials
  • Confirm invoices for all PPE and safety purchases to ensure accurate charges
  • Maintain data collection and reporting required for OSHA & FMCSA compliance (Occupational Safety and Health Administration & Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration)
  • Attend safety meetings as required
  • Run 3rd Eye (truck cameras) daily reports which includes infraction and coaching reports
  • Review all infraction videos and distribute to appropriate team members
  • Complete weekly infraction report for Operations Department
  • Work with 3rd Eye vendor regarding camera or other technical issues

Work Environment

  • The Safety Analyst will be based in our Jersey City, NJ location, however occasional job duties require traveling throughout NY/NJ areas.
  • This position requires both standing and sitting duties throughout the day.

Job Highlights

The Route Investigator will report to the Director of Risk Management and is primarily responsible for leading the analysis of any and all safety incidents. This position requires close attention to detail as they will conduct all preliminary and follow up investigation for incidents that Action has both caused and been accidentally involved in. As a member of the Risk and Safety team, this position plays a major role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our front-line employees who service widespread geographical areas day in and day out.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Inspect and document company vehicles after every incident
  • Inspect claimant’s vehicles at their designated location
  • Inspect and document all property damages inflicted by company vehicles
  • Environmental Spill Coordination is responsible for initiating spill response, documentation and management following incident
  • Record environmental incidents in SMS360 (Safety Management Systems)
  • Complete accurate and detailed scene diagrams and photos
  • Coordinate all police reports
  • Attend monthly safety meetings (and as needed)
  • Run 3rd Eye (truck cameras) daily reports which included infraction and coaching reports
  • Process all 3rd Eye incidents related to accidents, property damage, spills and injuries
  • Review all infraction videos and distribute to appropriate team members/departments
  • Assist with occasional Safety Blitz for each depot
  • Work closely in conjunction with and receive daily assignments from the Safety Liability Claims Adjusters

Work Environment

  • The Risk Investigator will be based in our Teaneck, NJ location, however occasional job duties require traveling throughout NY/NJ areas
  • This position requires both standing and sitting duties throughout the day.
  • This position is reimbursed for all company related travel expenses
  • The standard workweek is defined by management and may be changed but is regularly a minimum of 40 hours per week paid at an hourly rate.

The Corporate Safety Manager is mainly responsible for compliance with the Company’s Health and Safety Programs and aligning company standards with all applicable legislation. Our goal is to ensure that all programs introduced to staff members and management are communicated properly and understood in order to provide a safe workplace. They will be reinforcing the safety of front-line staff members who service both our NY and NJ market areas.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Communicate operational safety issues as needed to supervisors, managers and other employees
  • Administer all new hire orientations
  • Assist in the implementation and carrying out of safety training programs
  • Represent the Safety Department for Operational staff meetings
  • Conduct weekly incident review with site managers
  • Conduct monthly safety meetings throughout depots

  • Assist Risk Management department to implement Loss Prevention measures
  • Review and communicate findings of Behavioral Analysis reports on regular basis
  • Recommend coaching materials to Operations management as needed

This position will report to the NJ Regional Sales Manager based out of our Teaneck Headquarters.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Manage existing business relationships in order to achieve sales goals by developing and implementing sound retention strategies, utilizing strong negotiation efforts to preserve business, and secure contract agreements
  • Responsible to save and secure all customer cancellation requests by providing ongoing education of contract details to customers
  • Reduce lost accounts by diffusing cancellation requests
  • Increase revenue and profitability by executing efficient plans on retention calls to improve the customer’s service and/or profitability
  • Actively track accounts that have moved or closed to include follow-ups in order to retain service
  • Prepare sales proposals and make recommendations on equipment as seen fit
  • Update and secure customer service agreements and ensure that customers have current signed written agreements on file
  • Respond to all increases and decreases in service, change of ownership and other miscellaneous service changes that affect revenue
  • Perform outbound customer relationship calls to existing customers to improve customer profitability through a perpetual pricing program as required
  • Perform outbound collection calls as required
  • Effectively negotiate with all customers to retain relationships and associated revenue during pricing initiatives

Work Environment

  • The Corporate Safety Manager will be based in our Teaneck, NJ location, however a majority of the job duties require traveling throughout Northern NJ.
  • This position requires both standing and sitting duties throughout the day.
  • This position is reimbursed for all company related travel expenses

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • High school/GED education completed, higher education is a plus.
  • Minimum one year outside sales experience from a service industry is mandatory

Job Highlights

Drivers are responsible for safely operating a front-, side-, or rear-loading truck, for the pick-up service of bags or containers filled with waste or recyclable material. Drivers transport the material to a disposal, transfer or recycle facility, and may make one or more trips throughout the shift.

Our Drivers service up to 500 customers per day according to their assigned routes. Routes may require Drivers to navigate through congested communities and confined or tight areas in city locations. Highly skilled backing maneuvers are essential too successfully perform this job. Our drivers routinely climb in and out of the truck cab to service customer accounts.

In addition, Drivers are responsible for ensuring their truck is in compliance with Action’s safety standards as well as OSHA and DOT regulations, and local traffic laws, prior to and while operating the vehicle.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform pre- and post-route inspections of assigned truck and document any safety issues on standard reports.
  • Continuously monitor for safety and service related issues, as well as containers or other equipment in need of repair, and report any issues to the Route Supervisor or Dispatch.
  • All Action employees are expected to be responsible and accountable for the safety for themselves, their colleagues, the trucks, and other equipment and property. Drivers must immediately notify Route Supervisor or Dispatch of any incidents, accidents, injures, or property damage.
  • Communicate professionally with customers and Dispatchers at all times. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and quality of service. Our Drivers must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner.
  • Work closely with Route Supervisor to improve route efficiencies and identify best practices.

Work Environment

  • We are continuously investing in equipment, and many of our trucks are less than 2 years old.
  • We deploy both manual and automatic trucks.
  • The Driver position may be required to repeatedly lift up to 50 pounds, and move and maneuver up to 100 pounds, as well as mount and dismount the truck multiple times every route.

Requirements

Job Description:

The Collection Helper’s main responsibility is to collect (primarily by hand) and load refuse from customer locations into a heavy duty sanitation vehicle. Unless designated by the company as a CDL Helper, Helpers are not permitted to operate a company vehicle at any time. The position reports to the Operations Manager onsite, but is also subject to supervision by Route Supervisors and Dispatchers. Other responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Transfer refuse in a timely and safe manner from customer stops to vehicle
  • Assist the driver while maneuvering into positions for collection and disposal
  • Maintain and partake in daily clean-up of vehicle
  • Learn garbage routes to better assist driver
  • Attend all required training, operational meetings, and mandatory monthly Safety Meetings

Work Environment:

  • Helpers spend majority of daily routine both in the cab of the truck, on the back of the truck, or moving around the truck for trash collection
  • Helpers must be able to physically mount and dismount the truck throughout the duration of the work day
  • Helpers must be able to constantly lift, push, and pull waste bags and receptacles that weigh approximately 50-75+ lbs. as part of their daily routine. The bags usually have no wheels or handles for easier maneuverability, so the employee must have the physical strength to carry out the job duties.

Job Highlights

Our Heavy Duty Diesel Technicians perform inspection, diagnosis, preventative maintenance, and repair of electrical, hydraulic, suspension, brake and air systems on vehicles and equipment, including diesel heavy trucks and engines. Utilizing diagnostic software, the Technician is responsible for interpreting failure modes and initiate or assign necessary repairs. At times, the Technician may be on call, and required to assist with emergency breakdowns.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintains advanced knowledge to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy equipment.
  • Performs repairs and assigned preventative maintenance services.
  • Estimates time and material cost on vehicle repairs and requisition of new parts.
  • Conduct safety checks on vehicles.
  • Completes required paperwork utilizing fleer maintenance software program associated with repairing vehicles, documenting part usage, and accounting for repair time.
  • Reviews, completes, or assigns repairs identified on Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Maintain a clean, safe work area in compliance with Company safety protocols and OSHA standards.
  • Assists Sr. Technicians in the completion of project work.

Work Environment

  • We are continuously investing in equipment, and many of our trucks are less than 2 years old.
  • The Heavy Duty Diesel Technician will primarily be working out of our Jersey City, NJ location, however occasional travel to other sites as well as assisting with emergency breakdowns will be required.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided.
  • The Heavy Duty Diesel Technician position may be required to lift up to 50 pounds. Frequent squatting and standing is required.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the United States.
  • A valid driver’s license is required. CDL preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in job duties.
  • Experience with troubleshooting/repairing DPF systems diagnostic software such as Premium Tech Tool (Mack), Allison transmission, Cummins, CAT, Peterbilt, and Paccar.
  • Yellow Iron experience and/or experience as a Mechanic or Technician for a refuge company is a plus.

Truck Drivers - Roll Off (NY/NJ Locations)

JOB DESCRIPTION
Our Roll-Off drivers are responsible for the hauling of construction debris typically from large high volume construction sites. The driver is responsible for performing assigned duties on container delivery and hauling of industrial roll-off routes. This physically strenuous position involves mounting and dismounting a heavy-duty truck numerous times each day.

At Action Environmental Services our Commercial Drivers operate rear load trucks to service commercial routes removing and transporting waste or recyclables in fulfillment of customer contracts. This position will service approximately 200 to 500 commercial customers per day according to the assigned routes. The waste will then need to be transferred to the appropriate station, landfill or drop-off location.
