Earth Week 2016

Earth Week 2016

Today marks a very important day for us as a recycling company, as a business, and as residents of this planet. It’s Earth Day!

Each year on April 22 we celebrate the anniversary of an environmental movement that began over 45 years ago.

History of Earth Day

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

On April 22, 1970, millions of Americans took to the streets, parks, and auditoriums to demonstrate for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. Thousands of colleges and universities organized protests against the deterioration of the environment. Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values.

Action Loves Earth Day

One key element for sustaining the planet is the importance of recycling. As a waste and recycling company this topic is very near and dear to our hearts.

We've been celebrating earth day all week long by stopping by various earth day events and educating people on the need for recycling.

Time Warner Center Earth Day

As one of our biggest customers, the Time Warner Building at Columbus Circle invited us to participate in their annual Earth Day celebration. While we were there we had the privilege of talking with shoppers, store employees and local NYC residents on what items they should recycle. The one revelation we discovered was that many people said they do recycle but feel they could be doing a better job.

We'll definitely be back next year!

Green Festival 2016 NYC

Green Festival is America’s largest and longest-running sustainability and green living event. They bring together the world’s most trusted companies and conscious consumers in one place to promote the best in sustainability and green living.

Recycling

Our CEO Ron Bergamini had the amazing opportunity to speak with the festival attendees about the state of recycling. He addressed very real concerns for the industry and where it might take us.

Warwick Valley High School Airmont Tour

Students from the Advanced Placement Environmental Science program at Warwick Valley High School were treated to a tour of our Airmont transfer station. Their teacher explained as Orange County residents it is “important for the students to see where their waste and recycling ends up after it’s collected.”

Airmont

Being that it was an advanced level science course the students had some great questions for our Director of Safety Ken Levine. They discussed the economics of recycling along with the environmental factors.

Thanks for stopping by guys!

Orange County Elementary School Visits

We figured what better way to make sure that the message of Earth Day is carried on for generations to come, then to start by educating the future leaders of our country.

We stopped by a bunch of elementary schools all over Orange County, NY to speak to the kids about recycling. We met with students in grades K-5 and explained what items can and cannot be recycled.

Walden Elementary

Thank you to Middletown’s William Carter Elementary School, Maybrook’s VCSD Alternative Learning Center, Montgomery Elementary School, and Walden Elementary School for letting us speak to the kids.

Bergen County Earth Week - Hillsdale, NJ

To finish out the week long celebrations you can find us this Sunday at the annual Bergen County Earth Week event in Hillsdale, NJ.

Bhive earth day

The event was launched in 2012 by the local organic salon The B Hive. The event now draws a huge crowd of local residents all there to celebrate sustainability and Earth Day.

One final thought...

We should treat every day like Earth Day, we only get one planet!
