A Moment of Silence to Memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr

We are honored to take part in today's moment of silence to memorialize Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his death. April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot while standing on the balcony outside his second-story room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee. The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support the sanitation workers’ strike rallying for fair wages and safer working conditions.

We are proud to have had two of our drivers Gustavo DeLeon and Joseph Ostro were on hand in Memphis to mark such an iconic day. (Pictured here with Teamsters General President James Hoffa).

A word from our CEO Ron Bergamini:

During his final days, Martin Luther King Jr. stood by striking sanitation workers. Now 50 years later his legacy continues to inspire new generations in confronting injustice.  His speech in Washington is the best I have ever heard.

There are so many great line like this one: “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."

You may not know that he was in Memphis 50 years ago today supporting sanitation workers on the day he assassinated. Below is the speech. Take the time to listen to it. I guarantee you will be moved.
